Many people when they contact me for personal training services say they need someone to “motivate” them. It is also implied that a personal trainer’s job is to motivate their clients. But is it really? Is motivation your answer for solving your problem?
I’m here to tell you that motivation is fleeting and also extremely internal. What I mean is you can’t expect an external source such as a personal trainer to provide motivation. They can make the session fun and they can bring energy to the session but they cannot provide the motivation for you. You need to do that yourself and in reality you are only going to feel motivated at the beginning of a fitness journey.
In the beginning it’s exciting that you have decided to embark on a fitness journey. Maybe you have always been overweight and finally you have decided you don’t want to live like that anymore so you are very “motivated” to make change and do this for yourself. Or maybe you have always been skinny and not very strong with any kind of muscles. So you decide to become stronger and more muscular. This is when motivation is at it’s highest, when you have made a mental resolve to achieve something.
But after a while you lose motivation because you realize this is going to take hard work or it isn’t as easy as you thought it was going to be. Maybe things aren’t moving along as fast or as well as you expected. Motivation goes way down after this.
Comment your thoughts!
You can’t rely on motivation to ultimately reach your fitness goals. It’s not going to work. What you really need is commitment and discipline. You need to make this decision to solve whatever fitness problem you have got going on and stick to it no matter what. You aren’t always going to feel like working out. Even for me who loves fitness and any kind of activity, feels this way. Sometimes I don’t want to get up and exercise but I do it anyway. This is called discipline and commitment. This has nothing to do whatsoever with motivation.
You need to make the resolve that you are going to do this and follow it through to the end, until. Until you reach your goal and then you are going to continue after that to maintain the level of fitness that you have achieved for yourself. It’s a simple as that. So next time you just don’t feel like doing something but you know it will benefit you and you need to do it, just go do it. You will always be happy that you did!!
