how to choose the right gym for you

When trying to choose the right gym for you, you need to take into consideration some factors. Yes location is a major factor in choosing a gym but there are also other things to consider. The number one being your personality and if you are going to be comfortable there! If you’re ultra conservative, you might not be so keen on a gym that’s very sociable or vice versa. Maybe you are the unconventional type so you don’t want to be at a gym where everyone’s an introvert donning a three piece suit or a Lululemon outfit! You want to be with your people is what I’m saying. If you don’t feel like you’re going to fit in, chances are you won’t actually go to the gym very often. This is very counter intuitive!

Another factor is what you will actually be doing at the gym. Are you into lifting heavy weights? Like Barbells, Kettlebells and Dumbbells? Or are you into calisthenics? Maybe CrossFit’s your bag. These are very important, even crucial when picking a gym. A gym membership is a long term contract most of the time. Most gym memberships are at least a year long so you really want to be at a gym that has all the equipment you need to be successful.

A third factor when choosing a gym is the lifestyle attitude of the gym. Do you want lunk alarms going off because you grunted a bit? Or pizza at the front desk? What about staff who don’t work out at all and don’t take fitness very seriously. This could greatly impact your fitness goals and success. When you walk into the gym, you want to feel enthusiasm for fitness from the staff that work there. And this may sound judgemental but they also should be fit themselves. This gives you the feeling that they value fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

Is the gym clean? Take a look inside the locker but specifically the showers and the toilets. Are they clean? Do the showers have mould? Do the toilets have pee around the bottom of them? I know this sounds gross and it is! But you need to know these things. in addition to the gym being clean, how much of the equipment is out of order and needs to be fixed? Both of these things need to be taken into consideration when choosing the right gym for you.

Final factor when choosing a gym is the cancellation policy and other policies such as dress codes. Gym policies are not things that people normally think about before buying a membership but remember you’ll be in this gym contract for at least a year so these are very important things to consider. Included in these policies are hours of operation. Is the gym 24 hours? Or do they close on the weekends or close at 9 or 10 every night? This is so important so you will need to think about what times you want to workout. And choose your gym accordingly.

Did I miss something? What do you consider important when choosing the right gym for you? I hope you are happy with the gym you picked and if you haven’t yet and are still doing nothing for fitness, start looking for a facility! Ask me a question. I’m here to help!
